The Authority of Christ

28 And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29 for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.
Matthew 7:28–29

The Authority of Christ
Jesus does not teach like the scribes. His words carry an authority that no human wisdom can possess. He does not merely offer advice for better living or provide another interpretation of God’s Law. He speaks as the Son of God, whose Word reveals both our sin and our salvation. When Christ’s Law exposes our pride, our self-righteousness crumbles. We cannot stand before God on the strength of our obedience. Yet the same Lord who speaks with divine authority also speaks words of forgiveness, life, and salvation. His authority is revealed most clearly at the cross, where He bears the judgment our sins deserve and reconciles us to the Father. The crowds marveled at Jesus’ teaching because His authority was unlike anything they had heard. Dear Christian, your faith rests not on human opinions, religious achievements, or the shifting wisdom of the world, but on Christ and His authoritative Word. Through that Word, the crucified and risen Savior still comes to you, declaring you forgiven and beloved for His sake. His promises do not fail, because He is the Lord who conquered sin, death, and the devil.
