We Have Sinned

33          “How well you direct your course
to seek love!
                        So that even to wicked women
you have taught your ways.
            34          Also on your skirts is found
the lifeblood of the guiltless poor;
                        you did not find them breaking in.
Yet in spite of all these things
            35          you say, ‘I am innocent;
surely his anger has turned from me.’
                        Behold, I will bring you to judgment
for saying, ‘I have not sinned.’
            36          How much you go about,
changing your way!
                        You shall be put to shame by Egypt
as you were put to shame by Assyria.
            37          From it too you will come away
with your hands on your head,
                        for the Lord has rejected those in whom you trust,
and you will not prosper by them.

Jeremiah 2:33-37

We Have Sinned
The Law of God shows us our sin. This is the so called second use of the Law. Thus the devil, the world, and our sinful nature must do all that is within their power to keep us from looking into that mirror bright. There is not one, no, no one that does any good, Saint Paul reminds us. At some point the Law catches up with us. The terror of our sin grabs ahold of us and we despair. The only way to change your ways is if the Holy Spirit changes your heart. He must take your heart of stone and sin and darkness out and replace it with a heart of flesh, a heart that is his temple. You were meant to walk with God all the days of your life. Apart from him there is no life. So, the Lord seeks you out, puts his Holy Spirit in your heart, and grants you faith. Knowing you are a sinner while you have faith is a great combination because it is then that you can repent. A new man emerges and a new life in Jesus is lived. In Jesus you prosper. In Jesus you are justified. In Jesus you have forgiveness and life and in him alone.
