43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Love That Reflects the Father
Jesus’ command to love our enemies exposes how far our sinful hearts fall short of God’s holy will. We naturally love those who love us, while keeping our distance from those who hurt, oppose, or despise us. Yet the Father shows kindness even to the undeserving, giving His gifts to both the righteous and the wicked. This command does not mean approving of evil or pretending that sin does not matter. Rather, Christian love seeks the good of the neighbor, even the enemy, and brings that person before God in prayer. The call to be “perfect” leaves no room for boasting in our own righteousness. Instead, it drives us to Christ. For we have not loved our enemies as we should. Yet Christ loved us while we were still sinners and bore our hatred and rebellion upon the cross. There He won forgiveness for enemies like us. Having received such mercy, we are freed to show mercy to others.
