Sanctified for the World

15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.
John 17:15-19

Sanctified for the World

On the night before His cross, Jesus prays not that His disciples would be removed from danger, but that they would be guarded within it. Christians live in the world while no longer belonging to it. This tension is not resolved by withdrawal, but by sanctification, being set apart by God’s truth. That truth is not an idea or strategy. It is the Word made flesh, who goes willingly to the cross. There, Christ consecrates Himself for us, bearing the world’s sin so that we might be made holy in Him. We are sanctified not by our separation from sinners, but by Christ’s saving death for sinners. Having been washed and claimed in that truth, we are sent. The cross shapes our calling: not triumph, but faithful witness; not escape, but love amid suffering. Guarded by the Father, sanctified by the Son, we are placed where Christ Himself has gone, into the world He died to save.
