Abiding in the Vine

5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.

Abiding in the Vine
To abide in Christ is not a gentle suggestion but the very shape of Christian life. Jesus’ image of vine and branches reminds us that life does not flow from within us but into us, from Him who was lifted up on the cross. “Abiding” means continuing in His Word, trusting His promises, and receiving His gifts. Apart from Christ, our works wither; united to Him, even our smallest fruit is His gracious doing. We often try to live as if we can bear fruit on our own, through effort, resolve, or religious feeling. Yet the Father prunes us through His Word, cutting away our self-reliance so that Christ alone becomes our life. In Him, crucified and risen, we are grafted into a living grace that endures. Abiding in Christ is abiding in His cross, where our sin is judged and our life is restored.
