Hearing the Shepherd’s Voice

22 At that time the Feast of Dedication took place at Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the colonnade of Solomon. 24 So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” 25 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name bear witness about me, 26 but you do not believe because you are not among my sheep.

Hearing the Shepherd’s Voice

At the Feast of Dedication, Jesus stood in the temple and was asked to declare plainly if He was the Christ. His answer cut through their unbelief: they did not believe because they were not His sheep. Faith is not born from human reasoning or demand for proof but from hearing the Shepherd’s voice. The sheep know His voice because His Word creates faith in them. The cross reveals that voice most clearly, there the Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. The unbelieving world sees only weakness and defeat, but those who hear by faith recognize their salvation. By His Word and Spirit, the crucified and risen Christ calls, gathers, and keeps us as His flock. In His voice we find certainty, not in signs or arguments, but in the pierced hands that hold us fast. His sheep listen, and follow Him to life.
