Washed in the Waters

6 Having said these things, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he anointed the man’s eyes with the mud 7 and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing.

Washed in the Waters
Jesus heals a man born blind with mud and water. What looks foolish is the very means by which God brings sight. This miracle foreshadows Baptism, where Christ takes sinners blinded by sin and gives them the light of faith. Just as the blind man could not heal himself, so also we cannot free ourselves from our darkness. Christ places His cross upon us in Baptism, washing us not with ordinary water only, but with water combined with His Word and promise. At the cross, the world saw only weakness, shame, and death. Yet from that tree flowed the cleansing blood that opens blind eyes and hearts. In Baptism, the crucified and risen Lord washes us, and we rise seeing clearly that our life is hidden in Him. Sight is not our achievement, but His gracious gift.
