Kept by His Word

48 The Jews answered him, “Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?” 49 Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. 50 Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.”
John 8:48-51

Kept by His Word
The crowds accused Jesus of being possessed, dishonoring Him with slander. Yet Jesus does not defend Himself with pride but with the promise that whoever keeps His Word will never see death. This is no empty boast, it is the heart of the Gospel. His Word delivers what it says. To “keep” it is not merely to follow commands but to cling to Christ in faith. To keep His Word is to hold fast to His teaching that brings forgiveness, life, and salvation. This life is ours only through the cross, where Jesus bore our sin and conquered death. Though the world may dishonor Christ and despise His Word, it remains our treasure. In Baptism and faith, His Word keeps us. Death is no longer the final word. Christ’s cross and empty tomb have spoken the greater Word, eternal life.
