The Works of God
28 Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” 30 So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? 31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”

The Works of God
It is our nature to want to do. The rich young lawyer asks, what must I do to inherit eternal life. The people here present ask, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” How do we pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps and still be doing work that is pleasing to God? Notice that Jesus’ answer turns the tables. The work belongs to God. He is the one that calls you by the Gospel, enlightens you with his gifts, and sanctifies and keeps you in the true faith. God is the one that grants belief, belief in Jesus. This is the God that comes down to save. The works seem insignificant, but they are life changing and lifesaving. The God that gave bread from heaven has sent his Son from heaven to die on the cross and in weakness accomplishes even your salvation.
