Seeking the Giver, Not the Gift

22 On the next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. 23 Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24 So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.

Seeking the Giver, Not the Gift

The crowds followed Jesus across the sea, not because they grasped who He was, but because they had eaten their fill of bread. How easy it is for our sinful hearts to do the same, seeking Jesus for earthly blessings, not for the eternal life He alone gives. This passage exposes our tendency to desire the gift over the Giver. Yet, Christ did not come merely to fill stomachs; He came to give His very body into death for us. On the cross, He bore our sin and opened heaven to us, giving Himself as the true Bread of Life. In Him, we find what no earthly meal or blessing can provide, complete forgiveness, reconciliation with God, and the promise of resurrection. Let us seek Him not for passing gain, but for the eternal life that flows from His pierced hands.
