The Bread in the Wilderness

7 Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.” 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, 9 “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?” 10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number. 11 Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted.

The Bread in the Wilderness
Philip’s calculation was correct, humanly speaking. Two hundred denarii would not buy enough bread for the crowd. Andrew’s report was no better, five loaves and two fish were laughably insufficient. Yet here stood Jesus, the One through whom all things were made, the Bread of Life Himself. In the wilderness, He took the little they had, gave thanks, and fed thousands. The cross works the same way. We bring nothing but our sin and need, and Christ gives everything, His own body and blood for our forgiveness, life, and salvation. Just as the bread in Galilee did not run out, the mercy of the crucified and risen Christ never runs dry. In Him, scarcity is transformed into abundance, want into satisfaction. Our Savior still feeds His people, not with barley loaves, but with Himself, sustaining us for the journey until we feast with Him forever.
