The Father’s Work in the Son

15 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. 16 And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.”
John 5:15-17

The Father’s Work in the Son
Jesus is accused of breaking the Sabbath because He heals and commands a man to carry his mat. But His response reveals the heart of God: “My Father is working until now, and I am working.” The Sabbath was never about inactivity; it was about God’s gracious work of restoring His fallen creation. In Christ, the Father’s saving work is made visible, not merely in healing broken bodies, but in bearing our sin and death upon the cross. There, the Son’s obedience fulfilled the Law, including the Sabbath, for us. In His death and resurrection, He gives true rest, the rest of forgiveness and life with God. Even now, Jesus continues His Father’s work through His Word and Sacraments, applying His cross to us. When wearied by sin or burdened by guilt, we find our Sabbath rest in Christ alone, who is always working to save.
