Lifted Up

13 No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. 16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

Lifted Up
This is the crux. Everything in Baptism is this one thing, “as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.” This lifted up One delivers on his promises in Baptism. Every promise is made and completed for you and to you in your Baptism. The victory of the cross over your enemies and the righteousness of God granting you Jesus’ station and title. You are little Christs. You are the recipients of a debt-free, sin-free, eternal life. How great is the love that the Father has lavished upon you that you should be called Children of God, and so you are. You have been lifted up and will live forever in heaven with Jesus. His cross is your death, and his empty tomb is your eternal life. Don’t you know that all of you that have been Baptized into Christ have been Baptized into his death? And if you have been Baptized into a death like his, you have also been Baptized into a resurrection like his. Rejoice in the love of God for you.
