Holy Passion

14 In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. 15 And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. 16 And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make my Father’s house a house of trade.”

Holy Passion
In the temple, Jesus overturned tables and drove out merchants, consumed with zeal for His Father’s house. This was no impulsive rage, it was holy passion to preserve true worship. The temple was meant for prayer, sacrifice, and the promise of forgiveness, pointing forward to Christ’s ultimate sacrifice on the cross. But greed and earthly gain had crowded out reverence. Jesus’ actions remind us that God will not share His glory with idols. Our hearts, too, become cluttered temples, filled with selfish desires, distractions, and worldly concerns. In love, Christ still comes to cleanse us, driving out sin by His Word and Spirit. His zeal reached its fullest measure on Calvary, where He bore our sin and made us living temples of God. Washed clean by His blood, we now worship in Spirit and truth, trusting His mercy. Thanks be to God for the Savior who purifies us for His Father’s dwelling.
