Grace Upon Grace

15 (John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’ ”) 16 For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.

Grace Upon Grace
John the Baptist pointed beyond himself to the One who was before him, the eternal Word made flesh. Though the Law came through Moses, grace and truth come through Jesus Christ. The Law shows us our sin and our need. It accuses, exposes, and leaves us desperate for mercy. But Christ fulfills the Law and bears its curse for us. On the cross, He who knew no sin became sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. No one has ever seen God, yet the Son reveals Him perfectly. In Jesus, the invisible God is made visible, not in terrifying glory but in humility and sacrificial love. From His fullness, we receive grace upon grace, not deserved favor, but mercy flowing freely from His wounds. In Jesus, we see the heart of the Father: a heart that loves sinners and gives His only Son to save them. Thanks be to God.
