God’s Sovereign Hand
1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. 2 And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with some of the vessels of the house of God. And he brought them to the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, and placed the vessels in the treasury of his god.

God’s Sovereign Hand
The fall of Jerusalem and the exile of its people to Babylon seemed like utter defeat. Yet Daniel reminds us that the Lord gave Judah into Nebuchadnezzar’s hand. This was not merely the result of military power but God’s righteous judgment against His people’s sin. Even in judgment, though, He remained faithful to His promises. God works through earthly rulers, even those who do not acknowledge Him, to accomplish His purposes. The Babylonians carried off temple vessels, but they could not steal God’s presence from His people. Likewise, though the world seeks to remove Christ from public life, His reign remains unshaken. In Christ’s suffering, it seemed like darkness had won, but the cross was God’s plan for our salvation. Even when trials come, we trust that our Lord is in control. He turns even judgment into mercy, leading us to repentance and life in His kingdom.
