The Older Serves the Younger

And not only so, but also when Rebekah had conceived children by one man, our forefather Isaac, though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad—in order that God’s purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of him who calls—she was told, “The older will serve the younger.” As it is written, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”
Romans 9:10-13

The Older Serves the Younger
In her womb were twins. Esau and Jacob would cause great consternation for their parents. But even in their sin and struggles, God called. His Word was transformative. His Word always accomplishes that which it was sent to do. Jacob, the liar and cheat, becomes the father of a great nation. He rises, even though he was a sinner, and the Lord calls him with the Gospel of the Spirit. He is enlightened with the good gifts of heaven and he is called holy. So also, we who were still sinners, were rescued by a Word of promise and grace. God declares his good gospel to cheaters, liars, and the like. He does not call because of some merit in us, but because of his Fatherly divine goodness and mercy. He calls us with the forgiveness and salvation of the cross of Jesus. Jesus loves this way, he dies and rises again to buy you back. Thanks be to God.
