And in the hearing of all the people he said to his disciples, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, who devour widows’ houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”
Luke 20:45–47

We all want the best seats, to be honored at the head of the table, and respected by all. We live in a culture of celebrity. Everyone and anyone can become famous these days due to social media. But like celebrities on TV and social media, we want to cultivate our image, showing only the best parts and ignoring all the bad. We give an incomplete picture of who we really are. Truth be told we have more in common with the scribes than with the saints. And Jesus warns His disciples and us, not to be impressed by the scribes’ display. We are not to practice the faith simply to impress others. Instead, for our salvation, Jesus “made Himself nothing, taking the form of a servant.… He humbled Himself” (Philippians 2:7–8). We pray that our Lord would grant us the same humility and mind of Christ.
