Unworthy Servants?

“Will any one of you who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come at once and recline at table’? Will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me, and dress properly, and serve me while I eat and drink, and afterward you will eat and drink’? Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded? So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.’”
Luke 17:7-10

Unworthy Servants?
We are unworthy servants. We have sinned and deserve nothing but punishment and eternal damnation. Our sinful nature does not want to admit that it has done anything wrong, but we have earned death. The only title we can own up to is “unworthy servant.” We have not gone above and beyond. Yet, our Lord will not let us suffer eternal death. He rescues us from our impending doom. Coming in the flesh of Mary, he does the work we were required to do. He keeps the Law perfectly and completely. He suffers our punishment. He dies in our place. He takes everything for us and gives us his own treasure in its place. He wraps us in his righteousness, forgiven and free. We have his riches and are the delight of his eye. We say, we are unworthy servants, but he says, “Well done, good and faithful servant. Come, inherit the kingdom prepared for you.”
