Increase our Faith

The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” And the Lord said, “If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.

Increase our Faith
Faith is a gift of the Holy Spirit. The smallest bit of faith is still greater than anything in us. Faith clings to Jesus and his cross. It insists upon nothing but the gifts of forgiveness and salvation. So, the Holy Spirit calls us by the Gospel. Faith comes by hearing the Word of God. It does not spring up out of barrenness of our sinful heart. It does not come apart from the living God. Apart from Jesus, there is no faith. Faith springs forth out of the new heart that God creates. It is God that establishes a right relationship with you. He plants this faith in the fertile soil of the new heart, the new man, his righteousness. So, why can’t you move mulberry trees or mountains if this faith is so strong. It is capable, but it has another job. It has one work: cling to Jesus. True faith is only focused on Jesus and the forgiveness that he won for you and me. Thanks be to God that our faith has made us righteous in the blood of Jesus.
