Forgive and Forget

“And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? As you go with your accuser before the magistrate, make an effort to settle with him on the way, lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer put you in prison. I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the very last penny.”
Luke 12:57–59

Forgive and Forget
We live in an extremely litigious society. We will sue at the drop of a hat. The idea of forgiving someone who has wronged us is unheard of. Even if we say we forgive them we still want them to pay, to suffer as we feel we have. We forgive but we don’t forget, which really is no forgiveness at all. Jesus encourages His followers to repent and make peace quickly, so that a small conflict doesn’t escalate and spin out of control. His disciples are called not only to sacrifice possessions and relationships that get in their way in the kingdom but also to avoid getting caught up in disputes. Though hard feelings are often hard to let go, Jesus promises mercy and blessings for those who repent and receive His peace. May our hearts be free from any lingering resentment, ill will, or hatred toward another. May the Lord teach us to owe no one anything except the debt to love as He has loved us.
