A Lasting Change

“When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and finding none it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when it comes, it finds the house swept and put in order. Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there. And the last state of that person is worse than the first.”
Luke 11:24–26

A Lasting Change
The Gospel changes us. It changes us from lost to found, from sinner to saint. The old Adam in us dies as the new man arises daily. This lifesaving Word cannot help but change us. Yet many people falsely believe that they can receive salvation while at the same time continuing to embrace their sins. Like a person healed of demon possession, an unrepentant sinner, even after hearing the Good News, can fall into such trouble again. Thus, it is a grave mistake to imagine that we can receive the Gospel, come to Jesus, and yet continue in destructive ways and return to our sins. Thankfully though, when true faith comes, God’s Holy Spirit fills all those who repent and blesses us through His Word and Sacraments, so that we may be whole. The promise of the Holy Spirit, the promise of forgiveness of sins, the promise of the resurrection, guarantee that those who hear God’s Word and learn it will walk in the truth and light of our Savior Jesus Christ.
