Who is Worthy?

Soon afterward he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him, and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s household manager, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their means.

Who is Worthy?
Who is worthy of walking alongside Jesus, to be His emissaries? The truth is, on our own, none of us are. Yet it is not our merit but the blood of Christ that makes us worthy. We see here in these verses that Jesus breaks with rabbinic tradition and allows women to become disciples—those whom the culture of His day said were not worthy of such a task. And in the same way, the Church calls all its members to various forms of service. The Lord has appropriate forms of service for every member of His Kingdom, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or social standing. No matter how unworthy you believe you are, Jesus has still called you. He serves one and all by taking away your sins and giving you His Holy Spirit.  We pray He will continue to give His Church wisdom, that she may be a faithful steward of all people baptized in His name. May we all have a zeal for our own vocation and service, as well as the grace to encourage others.
