Do Not Weep

Soon afterward he went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. As he drew near to the gate of the town, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow, and a considerable crowd from the town was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.” Then he came up and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” And the dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us!” and “God has visited his people!” And this report about him spread through the whole of Judea and all the surrounding country.

Do Not Weep
There is little that is more heart-wrenching than to see the tears and hear the cries of a mother who has to bury her child, no matter how old the child is. Death’s sting is real, and it is painful. Here the dead man was being buried. Christ, the life and resurrection, meets the funeral procession and hears the weeping of the mother, and has compassion. He is the destroyer of death and of corruption. He is the One in whom we live and move and have our being. He has mercy upon the woman, and that her tears might be stopped, he commanded saying, “Do not weep.” And out of compassion, Jesus raises the young man back to life. Tragedy knows no bounds, striking people of every nation, age, and station in life. Thank God for His great compassion, that Jesus is the Savior for all people. The Gospel shows He has conquered every foe for us, even death and the grave. For death will have its way and its say in our lives, but Christ has the final Word. So do not weep, for Christ, who died and rose for you, has given you life eternal.
