Judging Others

“Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” He also told them a parable: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye.

Judging Others
Jesus does not mean that we should not call a sin a sin. He does not mean that we should ignore the Word of Holy Scripture or the Law that is even written on our own hearts. He has given us the Law in his Holy Word so that we know what sin is. Jesus wants you and I to know that we are all sinners and that we all deserve the same condemnation. We all deserve hell and eternal death. There is not one that has done good. A blind man cannot lead a blind man. That is why he gives us his holy Word. The Holy Spirit is our guide. The Word preached into our hearts leads us to repentance. Jesus uses that Word to change your life, to restore, make new, and forgive. He carries us from the terror of our sin to the comfort of his cross. He uses that Word to take the log out of your eye and to make your vision clear again. Availing ourselves of the means of grace, of preaching, and Baptism, and the Lord’s Supper, we are forgiven and known as the children of God. The only way to lead someone is to do so with the clarity of the Word of God preached into our ears. We are led by the Word. We are given life by his death.
