Love Your Enemies

But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic either. Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back. And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them. “If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.

Love Your Enemies
The Lord Jesus is calling you to be different from the world. He is calling you to depart from the messages of old. Even the sinners do good and love those who love them. By the power of Jesus’ cross, we are called to love our enemies and to do good to those who hate us. The work that flows forth from faith is to love and pray for those around us, even those we don’t like and those that do bad things to us. In this way, God calls us out from the rest of the world as his own people. Covered in the righteousness of Jesus and his cross, we are empowered to forgive, do good, love in the face of hate, and pray for all people and all our enemies. The reward is not an earthly one. Don’t expect to receive from the world. Instead, remember that the Lord has redeemed you, forgiven you, and restored you by his dying on the cross and rising again. He has prepared great rewards for you in heaven and even forevermore. Through his means of grace, Jesus makes us more and more like him. We are merciful, we are loving, we pray because he first did all these things for us. Amen.
