The Beatitudes – the Hated

Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man!

The Beatitudes – the Hated
We all desire to be liked. No one wants to be hated. So how is it that Jesus can say to us “Blessed are you when people hate you”? Hatred comes to the Christian because of Christ. The world does not want you to know Christ, to know true joy in His forgiveness. The world looks to the cross in scorn and hates you for trusting in it and the salvation won by Christ on it.  But after being hated because of Christ, being driven, and enduring every insult and shame on behalf of your faith in God, for you whose entire life centers on the resurrection and future blessings, every insult and scourging and persecution and the other sufferings leading up to the cross are all pleasure and refreshment and surety of heavenly treasures. For Jesus says, “Blessed are you when men reproach you and persecute you and, speaking falsely, say all manner of evil against you; for my sake rejoice and exult because your reward is great in heaven.”
