Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath

On a Sabbath, while he was going through the grainfields, his disciples plucked and ate some heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands. But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?” And Jesus answered them, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he entered the house of God and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him?” And he said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”

Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath
We know the Third Commandment: Remember the Sabbath Day by keeping it holy. The Lord gives rest by his preaching and his Sacraments. He wants you to be well nourished. The Lord makes you to be a whole human being. What is a whole human being? It is both body and soul. He makes you with both and sustains both of those things. The Pharisees had made so many regulations concerning the keeping of the Law that they had missed the point. Our God is the great provider. He who gave the Law, also gives rest in his Word and nourishment for our bodies by the wheat of the field. He gives us the Sabbath that we would stop, be fed, be nourished, clothed for battle, washed, and made ready. He does this for your soul, but not at the expense of our hungry stomachs. So, we fear and love God so that we don’t despise preaching and his Word, but we gladly hear and learn it. He gives his Word that we would know where our daily bread comes from and gladly give him thanks for that, too. Amen.
