Jesus Calls Levi

After this he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax booth. And he said to him, “Follow me.” And leaving everything, he rose and followed him. And Levi made him a great feast in his house, and there was a large company of tax collectors and others reclining at table with them. And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.”
Luke 5:27-32

Jesus Calls Levi

Jesus changes sinners by his voice. He calls Levi (also known as Matthew). Just like he called fishermen, he calls tax collectors. He calls sinners to be his messengers and ambassadors. His Word changes them. This Word changes us, too. The Holy Spirit uses this Word to create faith in our hearts. This faith works repentance. So it is that Jesus comes to the sinner like a doctor comes to the sick. He comes to heal and make new with his Word of absolution and peace. In the preaching of the Law and the Gospel, sinners repent and are forgiven. This is comfort to you, dear Christian. Jesus comes for sinners. He has forgiven you and made you his own by his Work on the cross. In his death, he grants you his life. That makes you the righteous of God.
