The Lord of the Harvest

35 And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”
Matthew 9:35–38

The Lord of the Harvest
Jesus looks upon the crowds and sees more than their outward troubles. He sees sheep harassed and helpless, wandering without a shepherd. His compassion is not sentimental; it moves Him to act. The One who sees the lost is the One who will go to the cross for them. The harvest is plentiful because sinners are everywhere in need of the forgiveness Christ alone provides. The problem is not merely a shortage of religious instruction or moral improvement. We are sinners who need a Savior. At Calvary, Jesus became the Shepherd who lays down His life for His sheep, bearing their sins and opening the way to eternal life. Jesus therefore teaches His disciples to pray for workers whom God will send into His harvest. Pastors and faithful Christians do not create the harvest or save anyone by their own strength. Christ is the Lord of the harvest. He sends His servants to proclaim His Word, through which He gathers His sheep into His Church.
