The Hiss of Judgment, the Promise of the Cross

16          “The snorting of their horses is heard from Dan;
at the sound of the neighing of their stallions
the whole land quakes.
                        They come and devour the land and all that fills it,
the city and those who dwell in it.
            17          For behold, I am sending among you serpents,
adders that cannot be charmed,
and they shall bite you,”
declares the Lord.

Jeremiah 8:16-17

The Hiss of Judgment, the Promise of the Cross
In Jeremiah’s day, the warning signs of judgment were already being heard. The enemy approached like the snorting of war horses and the hissing of serpents.  These images emphasize the terrifying certainty of God’s judgment against persistent unbelief. Israel had rejected the Lord’s Word, trusted in false security, and refused to repent. The approaching disaster was not random, it was the consequence of turning away from the God who had called them to Himself. Yet even in such fearful warnings, the Lord’s purpose is not merely destruction but repentance. The Law exposes sin and shows us the deadly bite of our rebellion. Like venomous serpents, our sin brings death. But the Lord did not leave His people without hope. Christ took the judgment we deserved upon Himself at the cross. There the venom of sin was spent on Him. Through His death and resurrection, the poison of judgment is overcome, and sinners receive life instead of death.
