The King Who Bears Witness to the Truth

37 Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” 38 Pilate said to him, “What is truth?”

The King Who Bears Witness to the Truth
Standing before Pilate, Jesus is bound, mocked, and seemingly powerless. Yet He speaks as a King. His kingdom does not rise by sword or ballot, but by truth, truth that comes from God and confronts every lie we tell ourselves. Truth is not an abstract idea but is bound to the person and work of Christ Himself. To hear the truth is to hear Him. Pilate’s cynical question reveals the fallen heart’s resistance: truth is treated as negotiable, useful only if it serves power or preserves peace. But Jesus does not argue philosophy. He will testify to the truth by going to the cross. There, the King is enthroned in weakness, crowned with thorns, and lifted up for the life of the world. At the cross, truth is not redefined but revealed: God saves sinners not by force, but by sacrifice. Those who belong to the truth hear His voice, and find their life in His death.
