Known by Christ, Not by Our Works

21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
Matthew 7:21–23

Known by Christ, Not by Our Works
“Lord, Lord” is not a confession of faith merely because it passes through our lips. Jesus warns that outward appearances, impressive deeds, and even religious accomplishments cannot establish a saving relationship with Him. This warning strikes at our sinful nature, which constantly seeks assurance in personal achievements rather than God’s gracious promises. Even our religious works cannot silence the Law’s accusation or earn God’s favor. Where, then, is our confidence? Not in what we have done for Jesus, but in what Jesus has done for us. At the cross, Christ bore our sins and secured our salvation. Through faith, we receive His forgiveness and stand before the Father, clothed in Christ’s righteousness. Dear Christian, your hope rests not in your works, but in the Savior who knows you and claims you as His own.
