The Faithful Son
13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” 14 And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt 15 and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.”

The Faithful Son
Jesus’ journey into Egypt reminds us that God’s plan of salvation does not always unfold in ways that look glorious. The infant Christ is carried away from danger, hidden in a foreign land, and brought back only when the threat has passed. Yet Matthew shows us that even these humble circumstances fulfill God’s promises. Matthew presents Jesus as the fulfillment of Israel’s history: where Israel was God’s son called out of Egypt, Jesus is the faithful Son who perfectly fulfills what Israel could not. This faithful Son would ultimately face a far greater threat than Herod. He would willingly go to the cross, bearing the judgment of sinners. There, He would not escape death but conquer it for us. When God’s providence seems hidden, remember Christ. The Father was working salvation even through the darkness. The same Lord who preserved His Son for the cross preserves you in Christ until He brings you safely home.
