The Lord Is Our Refuge
23 Concerning Damascus:
“Hamath and Arpad are confounded,
for they have heard bad news;
they melt in fear,
they are troubled like the sea that cannot be quiet.
24 Damascus has become feeble, she turned to flee,
and panic seized her;
anguish and sorrows have taken hold of her,
as of a woman in labor.
25 How is the famous city not forsaken,
the city of my joy?
26 Therefore her young men shall fall in her squares,
and all her soldiers shall be destroyed in that day,
declares the Lord of hosts.
27 And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus,
and it shall devour the strongholds of Ben-hadad.”

The Lord Is Our Refuge
Jeremiah’s oracle against Damascus reminds us that no earthly city, nation, or human strength can stand when the Lord brings His judgment. Damascus was an ancient and influential city, yet its strength could not save it. The Lord judges the nations for their sin and rebellion. His Word exposes the false security we place in earthly powers. We are tempted to do the same. We trust our possessions, our government, our health, or our own righteousness. But none of these can rescue us when we stand before the holy God. Yet the Lord’s judgment is not the final word for those who belong to Christ. At the cross, God’s righteous judgment against sin fell upon His beloved Son. Jesus bore the punishment we deserved and now gives us His righteousness. Therefore, do not place your confidence in things that perish. Take refuge in Christ crucified. He alone is our sure salvation.
