45 “In the shadow of Heshbon
fugitives stop without strength,
for fire came out from Heshbon,
flame from the house of Sihon;
it has destroyed the forehead of Moab,
the crown of the sons of tumult.
46 Woe to you, O Moab!
The people of Chemosh are undone,
for your sons have been taken captive,
and your daughters into captivity.
47 Yet I will restore the fortunes of Moab
in the latter days, declares the Lord.”
Thus far is the judgment on Moab.

The Lord Restores His People
Jeremiah’s prophecy against Moab ends with an unexpected promise: after judgment, the Lord will restore Moab in the latter days. The judgment is real, but it is not the final word. The Lord remains sovereign over the nations, bringing down human pride and preserving His purposes even through severe discipline. This reminds us that God’s judgment against sin is never arbitrary. We are sinners who deserve His righteous judgment. Yet the Lord who judges is also the Lord who saves. At the cross, God’s justice and mercy meet. There Christ bore the judgment our sins deserved, suffering under the wrath of God in our place. His resurrection declares that sin, death, and the devil have been defeated. Therefore, we need not despair when God humbles us or exposes our sin. His Law drives us to repentance, while His Gospel gives us Christ. In Him, restoration is certain, not because we deserve it, but because Christ has accomplished our salvation.
