When Hope Meets the Grave
17 Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. 18 Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off, 19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother. 20 So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house.

When Jesus finally arrived in Bethany, Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. To Martha and Mary, hope seemed buried with their brother. Yet Jesus’ timing was no accident. His delay revealed the greater glory of God, the glory of Christ’s victory over death. So often we stand like Martha, staring into the darkness of loss, wondering why the Lord waits. But Christ’s delay is never neglect; it is purposeful mercy. He does not come to patch up dying things but to bring life out of death itself. The grave cannot win where the Crucified and Risen One stands. At the cross, Jesus entered our tomb, taking on the full stench of sin and decay. From that grave, He rose so that we, like Martha, might see that even when all seems lost, Life Himself stands beside us.
