“It Is I; Do Not Be Afraid”

16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, 17 got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18 The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened. 20 But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” 21 Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

“It Is I; Do Not Be Afraid”
In the dark, the disciples strained at the oars, battered by wind and waves. Then they saw Him, walking on the sea. Terror gripped them until Jesus spoke, “It is I; do not be afraid.” His words carried more than comfort; they bore divine authority. The Greek echoes God’s own name, “I AM.” The Lord who once parted the Red Sea now comes to His people in the midst of the storm. So it is with us. The waves of sin, death, and the devil rise against us, but the crucified and risen Christ enters our chaos. The One who stretched His arms on the cross to calm the storm of God’s wrath is the same One who speaks peace into our troubled hearts. He is with us, not merely beside us, but as our Savior who has conquered all. “It is I.” That is enough. Fear flees; faith clings.
