One in the Crucified Christ

20 “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.
John 17:20-23

One in the Crucified Christ

On the night before His suffering, our Lord prays, not only for the apostles, but for those who will believe through their Word. This unity is not sentiment or organizational sameness, but a unity grounded in the truth of the Gospel. Jesus does not ask the Father to erase differences of personality or vocation. He asks that His Church be one as He and the Father are one: united in the saving work of Christ. That unity is forged at the cross. There, the Son is lifted up, bearing the sin that divides humanity from God and from one another. We are made one not by our effort, but by His sacrifice. Through Word and Sacrament, Christ gathers sinners into His body, forgiving, reconciling, and sanctifying them. This unity bears witness to the world, not because the Church is perfect, but because Christ is. Our oneness proclaims that the crucified and risen Jesus is truly sent for the life of the world.
