Unless He Washes

6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” 7 Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” 8 Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” 9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”
John 13:6-11

Unless He Washes
In the name of the Father and the + Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Jesus comes to us with his good gifts and Spirit. He seeks you out and delivers to you, but you are like Peter, you love to tell Jesus what to do and what not to do. The Lord of the Church is not thwarted by our demands. Unless he washes us, serves us, dies for us, and rises again for us, we cannot be saved. He comes to save. He comes to rescue you. He saves and rescues and makes new by his cross. He sustains your faith and he delivers to you his Holy Spirit. Jesus does not just drop off a delivery at the door of your heart and leave. He sustains you, fights for you and with you, and his Holy Spirit takes up residence in your heart. You are something new. You are a people of God receiving mercy and love from heaven. You are clean because Jesus washes you. In the name of + Jesus. Amen.
