The Man Called Jesus

8 The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar were saying, “Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?” 9 Some said, “It is he.” Others said, “No, but he is like him.” He kept saying, “I am the man.” 10 So they said to him, “Then how were your eyes opened?” 11 He answered, “The man called Jesus made mud and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed and received my sight.” 12 They said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.”

The Man Called Jesus
The neighbors of the blind man could hardly believe their eyes. Was this really the one who had sat begging for years? Their questions were not about his improved eyesight alone but about identity: “Is this the man?” In truth, Christ had done more than give him sight, He gave him new life. The man himself answered simply: “The man called Jesus… opened my eyes.” So also for us, baptismal water joined to Christ’s Word has made us new creations. Once blind in sin, we now see by faith. Yet the world still doubts and questions, and even we are tempted to wonder if the change is real. The cross reminds us: our Savior bore our sin and death so that His resurrection life might be ours. When asked who changed us, we confess with joy: “The man called Jesus.”
