Stones in Our Hands

53 They went each to his own house, 8 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. 3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst 4 they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. 5 Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” 6 This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground.

Stones in Our Hands
The scribes and Pharisees thought they had Jesus cornered. With stones ready, they set before Him a woman caught in sin, hoping to trap Him in His words. Yet as they tightened their grip on the stones of accusation, they revealed their own hardness of heart. We, too, are tempted to clutch stones, self-righteous judgments, harsh words, grudges, forgetting that we also stand guilty before the holy Law of God. But Christ does not come to condemn sinners to death; He comes to take death upon Himself. On the cross, the only truly righteous One is struck with the stones of God’s wrath in our place. The Law’s accusation falls silent at Calvary, for there mercy triumphs. When we are tempted to cast stones, we instead remember the One who bore ours. In Him, we lay down judgment and live in His forgiveness.
