Chosen in the Friend Who Saves

14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 These things I command you, so that you will love one another.
John 15:14-17

Chosen in the Friend Who Saves
Jesus calls His disciples “friends.” Not because they have proven loyal, but because He has chosen them in grace. This friendship is grounded not in mutual benefit but in Christ’s saving work, He lays down His life for those who could never earn such love. Friendship with Jesus is never sentimental; it is cruciform. It is shaped by the cross where He made us His own. He appoints us to bear fruit that endures, fruit born from His Word and nourished by His forgiveness. We do not choose Him, our sinful hearts could not, but He chooses us, calls us by name, washes us in Baptism, and declares us His friends through His redeeming blood. In a world quick to discard relationships, Jesus gives a friendship secured by His death and resurrection. Rest today in the Friend who chose you, redeemed you, and will never forsake you.
