Above All: Christ and His Cross

31 He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all. 32 He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony. 33 Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true. 34 For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. 35 The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand. 36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

Above All: Christ and His Cross
“He who comes from above is above all.” What comfort these words bring! John the Baptist directs our eyes away from ourselves to Jesus, who alone has come from heaven. We are of the earth, bound by sin and death. But Christ, the Son of God, came down to us, bringing the very words of God, speaking what He knows firsthand. Yet many reject His testimony. Still, those who receive Him receive life, life rooted in His cross. For there, Christ bore the wrath of God in our place, securing forgiveness and eternal life. By faith, we are not under wrath but under grace. This is God’s sure promise. Jesus alone reveals God fully and gives the Spirit without measure. Trust Him who was lifted up for you, and rejoice: in Christ crucified, you are loved beyond measure.
