No God but the Self

37 He shall pay no attention to the gods of his fathers, or to the one beloved by women. He shall not pay attention to any other god, for he shall magnify himself above all. 38 He shall honor the god of fortresses instead of these. A god whom his fathers did not know he shall honor with gold and silver, with precious stones and costly gifts. 39 He shall deal with the strongest fortresses with the help of a foreign god. Those who acknowledge him he shall load with honor. He shall make them rulers over many and shall divide the land for a price.
Daniel 11:37-39

No God but the Self

The king described in Daniel 11 exalts himself above all gods, disregarding even the “god of his fathers.” His lust for power and conquest is his only devotion. In every age, such self-deifying rulers emerge, seeking to replace God with their own glory. Yet this is not just the temptation of tyrants, it is the temptation of every sinful heart: to worship self, to trust in strength, wealth, or influence rather than in the Lord. But where the self-exalting king brings ruin, the true King, Jesus, humbled Himself, even to death on a cross. He did not take by force but gave freely. He did not glorify Himself, but was glorified by the Father in His obedient suffering and redeeming death. In Him we see the power of God not in domination, but in sacrifice. Against all false gods, the cross stands as the sign of the one true God who saves.
